Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has issued a deadline of 48 hours to the five emirs of the state that have been dethroned to vacate their palaces and return all government properties in their possession to the state government.
Alfijir labarai reports that Governor Yusuf issued the deadline minutes after announcing the reinstatement of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi to the throne of the Kano Emirate on Thursday.
The governor had reinstated Mr Sanusi, who was removed from his stool in March 2020 by former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, over a prolonged political dispute.
Mr Ganduje had then created additional emirates in Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye local government areas of the state, which were previously under the Kano Emirate ruled by Sanusi.
Also, Mr Ganduje had gone ahead to dethrone Mr Sanusi, less than two months after dismembering the Kano Emirate.
But on Thursday, the Kano State House of Assembly, led by Governor Yusuf’s party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) repealed the Emirates Council Law 2019, which Ganduje had used to create the four additional emirates and to depose Mr Sanusi.
The Assembly then passed a new law that restored a single Kano Emirate to serve the whole state under one emir.
The new law meant that all the stools occupied by the five emirs had become non-existent.
Signing the law on Thursday evening, Governor Yusuf said move indicates that there is only one Kano Emirate in the state.
He then announced that he had restored Muhammad Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano once again.
The governor then warned all the five deposed emirs – Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, Emir of Bichi, Nasiru Ado Bayero, Emir of Gaya, Dr Aliyu Ibrahim, Emir of Karaye, Dr Abubakar Ibrahim II and Emir of Rano, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad Inuwa to vacate their palaces and return all government properties.
“We have given the former emirs 48 hours to vacate their palaces and return all government properties in their possession,” the governor said.
“They are expected to hand over all properties belonging to the state government to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who is also the Deputy Governor”.
However, at the time of filing this report, none of the deposed emirs has reacted to the development in Kano.
It was learnt that both Emirs of Kano, Aminu Bayero and his Bichi counterpart and brother, Nasiru Bayero have traveled out of the state days before they were removed from their stools.
But Mr Sanusi, who is attending a summit in Portharcourt, Rivers state, is expected to arrive in Kano on Friday, where he would reportedly meet with the Governor Yusuf to receive his reappointment letter.
