President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom we believe to be a product of protests and many struggles — has been developing rhythms with complacency in all ramifications.
He has shown a feeling of contented self-satisfaction with his leadership styles, especially when he keeps mum on the yearnings and aspirations of the ordinary citizens.
Since the beginning of the #EndBadGovernance protests, majority of our governors, national assembly members and those in the corridors of power appear to be unaware of upcoming troubles that might consume us directly or indirectly.
My heart sank – I have never been as petrified, disoriented and overwhelmed as I was — Perhaps, with the exception of the first republic, there was no time Nigeria was led by people who properly understand or practice democracy or even tried to practice it.
Our democracy is sitting on too many pitfalls. It is not as exciting and stimulating as it should be. Our politicians appear to be above the law.
X-raying the major economic points from the speech of President Tinubu on nationwide protest on Sunday — what paradox defines Tinubu’s government? What paradox defines its words? What paradox defines its works? What paradox defines the general performance of Tinubu administration? Agric? Economy? Education? Power? Security? Human development? What?
What paradox defines the rank and file of the APC manifestos?
We are suffering from the culture of impunity and nepotism. People are living in illusion with lack of regenerative capacity. The standard living is failing. Life is becoming miserable in Nigeria.
The government has failed in almost everything; it has shown unable to secure the nation’s internal environment: there is insecurity everywhere, there is absolute and total decline in the quality of social services and a dilapidation in the nation’s socio-economic infrastructure across the country.
I cannot help wondering when I meditate about the democracy my country is claiming. A system that throws up all kinds of mediocre characters — only a system that expands the kidnappings, killings and stealings fields.
This country has never witnessed threat to its political system, unity and development like what we have under fourth republic with political wheeler-dealers of questionable integrity and character. They have been steering us to the cliff, perilously.
This politics of ethnicity or tribe – sect – politics of aggressive nationalism reflect dissatisfaction among too many citizens of Nigeria.
We must understand that the principles of open market, accountable governance, democracy, human development since national laws remain the foundation for human progress.
Never one to mince words, this government denies us dignity. And if you deny the dignity of people, you are subjecting yourself to public reproach.
In this country and from all indications — in all ramifications – we have to wait for another generation to get things right. Because of the kind of people we have around our political circle today have failed to rise up to the expectations.
We need a government – humble enough not to solve our problems for us but strong enough to give us tools to solve them for ourselves.
We need a few good people (men and women) of spirit and character of service to build institution that will back-stop incompetent leadership.
This can be understood when you listen to voice of young people everywhere. They call for freedom, dignity and opportunity to control their lives.
We must reject politics of identity, purpose and crisis. We must reject politics of vilification. We must reject politics of deception.
We must reject any form of fundamentalism on a believe in ethnic superiority that makes traditional identity incompatible with modernity.
I believe the next generation of young people would be more educated, inclusive, tolerant, diverse and creative in approach.
