The Kano State House of Assembly KNHA has charged the Minister of Finance, as the custodian of the stabilization funds accounts, to periodically print out the statement of accounts of each Local Government.
This was part of recommendations by the Chairman Public Accounts Committee, Alhaji Tukur Muhammad while presenting a report on the 2017 financial year for the 44 local Government areas in Kano.
In a press statement issued to newsmen by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai.
Alhaji Tukur Muhammad, who doubles as member representing Fagge constituency, explained that printing out the statement of accounts of the Local Government areas would enable the council to reflect the correct end-of-the-year balance during the preparation of its annual accounts.
Highlighting the limited resources and increasing public demands, he pointed out that Local Governments should not solely depend on Federal grants but should also find ways to generate Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) to meet public demands.
The chairman stressed that the Ministry for Local Governments should upgrade from the old system of heads and sub-head classification to the modern codes of accounts used by both state and federal governments.
Alhaji Tukur emphasized that proper maintenance and documentation of all financial transactions requires strict adherence to laws and regulations, following the principle of due process to ensure compliance with the genuine observations and recommendations of local councils.
The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Tukur Muhammad, thanked the speaker Alhaji Jibrin Ismail Falgore for entrusting them with the task and stressed that the outlined recommendations could guarantee transparency, and accountability in the administration of total control of income and expenditure of public funds.
Meanwhile, the Speaker KAlhaji Jibril Ismail Falgore, commended the committee.
